Why Immigration Courts Need Interpreters
Each year, the Executive Office for Immigration Review publishes a Statistics Yearbook on immigration court matters. This past year's report highlighted several trends in immigration, including an increase in the number of immigration cases when compared to previous years. In addition to an increase of immigration cases, the report also showed an increased need for translation services in the courtroom.

U.S. Immigration Courts are estimating a rise in court cases due to current changes in immigration policies.
In fact, last year’s trends displayed a 14 percent increase in court matters compared with 2015.
Further data confirmed an unbalanced system and an unbalanced workload. This was evident in the fact that 25 percent of all cases brought to the attention of the immigration court system were only accounted by five city immigration courts (there are 58 nationwide).

According to the Executive Office for Immigration, the top five languages represented in 2016 include:
Spanish - 75.73% of all initial case completions
English - 10.21% of all initial case completions
Mandarin Chinese - 3.80% of all initial case completions
Punjabi - 0.81% of all initial case completions
Arabic - 0.60% of all initial case completions
While Spanish is the most requested language for court interpreters, Administrative Deputy Clerk for the Racine County of Courts Office, Sam Christensen, says a few other language requests have been showing up, including Arabic, American Sign Language, Gujarati, Burmese, Hindi, Portuguese , Tagalog, Russian, Korean, Serbian, and Vietnamese.
“That’s just for the last couple of months,” Christensen added. "Whether you’re innocent or guilty, you have the right to understand the court process."
Interpreting the Results
These statistics confirm that native Spanish language speakers were responsible for the majority of court cases in the system last year (76 percent). Which, in turn, has resulted in an increased demand for Spanish court interpreters.

Due to price pressures, the translation business today can no longer remain profitable and competitive without automation. Almost all professional translators and bureaus work in translation memory programs (CAT-tools, they are also "cats"). Using these programs and companies save on average 36% of the budget and time, and sometimes up to 90%. A bureau whose strategy is focused on sales with professional and knowledgeable customers, for example, foreign translation agencies, cannot do without a whole set of several technologies.

In practice, on any serious scale, they only use one or two tools. For example, in Janus Worldwide, which has listed 19 instruments, the main ones are SDL Trados and Across. At Neotech and EGO Translating with 10 cats in stock, translators work daily at Trados and at Memsource.
What do the largest power supply units use?
The number of instruments and the company's revenue or profit are not related. Costs too: access to a couple of separate translation licenses for a dozen translation memory tools costs less than one serious group work solution. To determine which tools are used by the most successful companies, we selected 28 organizations with revenues of about 100 million rubles or more. The table below indicates their software preferences.
smartCAT and Transit moved up in the table
Compared to 2015, the number of users of all systems in the catalog has grown. But only smartCAT and Transit moved up in the table.
smartCAT managed to convince the Russian professional community after the system was separated from the parent organization ABBYY Language Services and became independent. In mid-2016, project manager Ivan Smolnikov left the post of CEO of ABBYY LS and began an active marketing campaign for translation agencies, using attracted investments of $ 2.8 million from the RedSeed fund. When large translation companies in Russia stopped seeing smartCAT as a competitor's tool, they began to use the system on real, not test projects. Small bureaus were attracted by the financial model of the system with free licenses, as well as the possibility of simple and legal payment for the services of freelance translators who are not registered as individual entrepreneurs (through a foreign legal entity).
Transit Nxt's positions rose due to a low base effect and a slight increase in marketing activity. Star Spb sponsored two industry conferences in Russia and began cooperating with universities. Translation agencies buy Transit Nxt not as an independent tool, but as a custom-made technology, when they cooperate with the STAR Group translation agency on a sub-contract, or when they fulfill orders of enterprises-users of Transit.

Bureaux are switching to new versions of Trados with a delay of 3 years
According to the catalog, most translation companies use old versions of Trados from 2011-2014. It can be concluded that these versions are sufficient for their current needs. Trados updates to the 2017 version in the store of the Russian SDL representative of the T-Service company cost from 8,500 to 40,000 rubles per license, depending on the edition (professional or individual). The Trados release cycle is 18 months, that is, new versions are released every one and a half years. Not all companies buy every release, many jump over one or two. This does not prevent T-Service from breaking sales records year after year.
Features of the national market for CAT programs
As in other countries, the most popular translation memory program in Russia is SDL Trados. Unlike other countries, among Russian translation agencies, the popularity of cloud-based tools is very high: Memsource and, from this year, smartCAT. On the other hand, memoQ is used much less, and mature and successful tools such as XTM, MateCAT and Wordbee are not in the top ten at all.
The popularity of systems, which interests in the Russian market is represented by a local partner, is higher.
- T-Service becomes the best in the world Reseller SDL by sales year after year.
- Atril Deja Vu gained popularity in 2011-2012, when their interests were represented by the Samara company All Correct.
- STAR Transit relies on the St. Petersburg company STAR SPb.
In Russia, Kilgray memoQ has a small share. The favorites of the world translation community Kilgray tried to open a Russian office in 2012, but after an unsuccessful first experience with hiring a director, they abandoned attempts to expand into our market. Instead, they subsequently opened an office in Japan, where the potential for their business is several times greater. And XTM, Across, MateCAT and Wordbee practically did not attend local events and did not invest in development in the Russian Federation. They prefer to sell to Russian companies when they attend international conferences.
Their share in the Russian market is not high, although Across, memoQ, and XTM are ahead of Memsource and smartCAT in terms of the total volume of business in the world. Perhaps even taken together.
How popular tools differ

Cloud systems are not cheaper than server ones, but they charge for a rental scheme, per month. |
