Push notifications how to configure. Push notifications: what is it, setting

A message that is pushed from a server application or program to the user interface. A common push notification scenario is a client application that displays a message in front of user information along with beeps. In some cases, it can also be combined with images and a hyperlink. Through interaction with push notifications, client applications usually come to the fore.

Using push notifications

Push notifications are typically used to let applications communicate to users. They may fall into the following categories:

Push notification history

How did push notifications come about? What it is? The first such notice was first introduced by Apple in 2009. In 2010, Google released its own service - Google Cloud to Device Messaging.

In November 2015, Microsoft announced that WNS would be expanded to include the universal architecture of the Windows platform, which allows push data to be sent to Windows 10, 10 Mobile, Xbox, and other supported platforms using universal API calls and POST requests.

Push notifications: what are these and what are the types?

Push notifications are mainly divided into 2 approaches: local and remote.

For local notification, the application plans to broadcast to the local device OS or, conversely, sets a timer in the application itself if it is able to continuously work in the background. The user receives a message when it is time for a programmed event. A notification is displayed in front of the user interface of the application.

For remote notification, a connection to the server usually occurs. In this case, the client application must be registered on the server with a unique key, for example, UUID. The message is delivered to the client application through a protocol agreed between the client and the server (most often HTTP).

How are push notifications displayed?

What is it - indicated above. But how do they appear in the user interface? A push notification can be displayed in various ways:

 • banner at the top of the screen;
 • pop-up window from the taskbar;
 • a dialog box that interrupts and blocks the application interface.

Typically, a notification contains:

 • title;
 • message details.

Also, the notification may contain an image or video, a link to the site, any attachment (for example, a txt file).

As long as the push notification arrives, it can also play sound signals to attract the user's attention.

How it works?

Push notifications are alerts from certain applications that relate to some new information. For example, if you receive a new letter, your device can be configured to automatically notify you when this happens. If you receive a new friend request on Facebook, the application of this social network can be configured to send push notifications so that you know about it right away. This will happen whether you are using the application or not at the moment.

Push notifications were intended to inform the user of something that he cannot see until he opens the application. However, not all push notifications have only a positive side. Some of them exist only in order to try to encourage you to return and play a certain game or use an application that you may have long forgotten about. This is why setting up push notifications can be important.

What do these messages look like on mobile devices?

Essentially, there are three types of push notifications that you can see. Some of them are more aggressive than others, but Apple gives you the ability to choose the ones you want to see, as well as the ability to completely disable push notifications.

Three main types:

 • The badges. This is the least annoying push notification, but for some users they look the most annoying. They are displayed as a number in a red circle in the upper right corner of the application icon. The number indicates how many notifications awaits your attention.

 • Banners Displayed at the top of the screen. They will remain on the screen for a few seconds, but then automatically disappear. You can also delete them manually by swiping up.
 • Alerts. These are the most obvious of the three, because they appear in the middle of the screen and interrupt everything that you are currently doing on your device.

Another type of notification you may encounter is sound. For example, if you set an alarm or a timer, sound may be played to notify you when the right time arrives. Sounds are often combined with warnings, but not always.

Disconnection

How to enable / disable push notifications on iOS?

Some apps support push notifications on iPhone. This is a way to send data specific to each service. These include news notifications and many other data. For push notifications to work, you must use iPhone OS 3.0 or higher.

How to enable push notifications:

1. Install an application that offers push notifications.

2. Go to Settings -> Notifications -> ON.

3. A list of applications that support push notifications appears.

4. Touch the application that you want to enable or disable for notifications, and select the options you want.

5. Sounds, alerts and icons can be turned on or off individually.

To disable push notifications:

1. Follow the steps above to enable notifications for individual applications.

In addition, sometimes there are times when the user simply does not want to be distracted by any notifications. For such cases, Apple introduced the Do Not Disturb feature. After activating it, you will immediately turn off all phone calls, alerts and notifications. So, if you are in a meeting or participating in an important event, you will not have any beeps or beeps from your iOS device. How to enable it? Go to "Settings" and select "Do Not Disturb" in the menu on the left. This option is good because it turns off just as easily.

Push notifications are pop-ups that appear on the screen of a smartphone or tablet. They show incoming information from various sources, which can be messengers, applications or the system of the device itself. There are absolutely pushas on all modern devices: be it apple gadgets or Google tablets. That is, there are push notifications for iOS, Android, as well.

Set up push notifications on devices running iOS, Android, and Windows Phone

Recently, the introduction of this function into the computer’s operating system has become especially popular. The first was Apple with its axis for OS X poppies. This, of course, is due to the high efficiency and ease of operation of the pushes, which have established themselves as the first source of information coming to a smartphone or tablet. Indeed, it would be foolish to refute such a comfortable method of notification: push notifications save the RAM of the device, since they do not require constant operation of the program or application. Consequently, there will also be Internet traffic.

But besides so much user care and timely alerts, push notifications can be annoying. Why do you periodically need a reminder from or the Twitter service that a user wrote: “I ate an omelet today. Was it delicious? ” Agree that this message does not carry a useful information load for you. It turns out that not all alerts are very useful. Of course, if you indiscriminately open access and agree to send you notices to programs and applications, then you will have millions of them. It is not very pleasant to delete them later, because on some systems you cannot delete everything at once. In this regard, there is a need for knowledge of how to configure and disable push notifications. Therefore, let's figure out the correct installation of this method of presenting information.

The volume buttons allow you much more than just increasing or decreasing the sound volume of your device. Brand new options and features have been added to this menu, which will undoubtedly be useful to any user. They allow you to switch between notification modes:

 1. “Do not disturb” - all incoming reminders and messages will come without sound;
 2. “Important” - you will receive only important messages from the list of programs that can be adjusted. When you turn it on, you will see a settings tab. In it, you can change the operating time of the mode. Moreover, there is a special tab that allows you to more flexibly configure this mode;
 3. "Everything" is the standard work of the device.

It is worth noting that push notifications configured in this way will be much more useful. Especially convenient is the “Important” mode, where you can easily manage the list of applications for accessing alerts.

For finer adjustment of information windows, just go to the section specially designated for this. It is located in the "Settings" menu of your device. In it you can, for example, remove notifications on the lock screen, open the possibility of notification for individual programs, change the list of blocked applications. Another very interesting feature is that in the menu of a separate application you can choose:

 1. Do not show from this application, thereby completely getting rid of the news of the program;
 2. Or show them at the top of the list, including when only important alerts are allowed.

You can enable or disable push notifications on iOS using the settings menu located on the main screen. You won’t have to search for the necessary submenu for long, because in the operating system it’s called “Notifications”. After you switched to it, on the right you will see a list of installed programs on the device. Above some will be the inscription “include”, and above others will be written “do not include”. This means that in the first case, alerts and push notifications are allowed, and in the second, respectively, no. Consider a detailed configuration example.

So, included in our first list. Click there and go to the notification settings page of this program:

 1. The very first we have permission for notifications with the appropriate slider. If you move it, then you turn them off. Accordingly, Skype will not notify you of anything;
 2. The next item we have is "In the center of notifications." It allows you to control the number of recent events displayed in the notification bar (that is, in the notification center);
 3. Sounds. With this slider you adjust the availability of sound for alerts;
 4. The sticker on the badge. Here you can adjust the presence of a sticker with the number of incoming events on the application icon located on the main screen;
 5. The penultimate setting in this menu is on the locked screen. She is responsible for displaying alerts when the screen of the tablet or smartphone is locked;
 6. Well, the last is the warning style on the unlocked screen. The first with such a categorical word "No" removes all visual notifications. Banners are the line at the top of the screen. Well, and “Warnings”, which are highlighted by a rectangle in the center of the screen with answer options. Actually, they are all clearly shown on the notification settings page.

You probably noticed that when you visit sites, some browsers give out a service message where the user is asked permission to show him notifications. These are the so-called web-push notifications, the purpose of the authors of which is to attract visitors to their site.

Many agree, but then they start to get bored with this service. What can I do to disable such notifications if you have already subscribed to them? How can I make sure that on subsequent visits to certain websites, such a subscription offer does not appear again and again? Let's look at the options.

It is worth noting that in front of Facebook a similar permission was asked me by domestic online stores, news portals, mobile operators, advertising agencies, brand pages and even some websites of government agencies. Where I have not noticed such requests - this is on porno resources.

As a result, the user begins to receive notifications in the form of clickable windows with a picture and text. When you click on this window, the user follows the link to the site to which he previously allowed to send him notifications. What for?

Prompt reporting of top news, promotions, yes about anything, but most often this is advertising information.

The boom in the introduction of this tool in the Ukrainian segment of the Internet, in my opinion, is caused by the fact that the service that provides the ability to send web-push notifications, after a short beta test, made it free. And away we go.

The massive introduction of the new tool prompted me to write instructions on how to unsubscribe from such notifications, as well as give a brief summary of the effectiveness of such a tool for the advertiser, and whether it’s worth connecting such a popular tool now.

How to unsubscribe? (information from open sources, including from the pages of the Push mailing services themselves)

Unsubscribe from push notifications in Google Chrome

Method 1. Upon receipt of the message.

As soon as you see a push notification, right-click on it to open the drop-down menu.

Click "Turn off notifications."

Method 2. Through the notification icon.

If you have accumulated unread notifications, a bell appears in the tray. When you click on it, the control panel for push notifications opens.

In the panel, you can view all missed notifications, set the Do Not Disturb mode, or completely disable push messages. To do this, just uncheck the sites from which you no longer want to receive notifications.

Method 3. Through the management of notifications in the Google Chrome browser

Go to the browser menu and select "Settings"

In the window that opens, select the subscriptions from which we want to unsubscribe, and delete them.

How to unsubscribe from push notifications in Safari.

We go along the path: Safari -> Settings -> Notifications. And turn off all the excess. Here you can also configure preferences for delivery of notifications: do not disturb mode, delivery time, etc. To do this, go to the Notification Preferences menu.

I want to note that to the company’s site, where until recently I was engaged in the digital direction, we connected this service at the beginning of the year. That is, I found times when this tool was not in BETA testing, it was paid and not so massive.

Indeed, the base of more than 10 thousand subscribers gathered quite quickly, and the first test mailing showed that the conversion to traffic to the site is higher than that of the classic E-mail newsletter.

Users really click on the windows and go to sites.

Obviously, as soon as a sufficient number of pages and digital managers subscribe to the service, it will become paid. At the same time, you most likely will not be able to transfer the subscriber base to another service. Hats off to my colleagues at Sendpulse.
