Charging the "old" Nokia 6230i from USB

  • Lumber room *

I have several old Nokia (Nokia 6230 and 6230i) in stock on my balcony. These phones are technically fully functional and therefore I want to use them in my projects, where communication such as sending and receiving SMS is required. There is quite a lot of material on working with telephones on the Internet. In particular, I can point to a very good set of articles, where it is described in detail how to send and receive SMS in PDU mode here

PDU mode is a tricky way to send and receive SMS not only in ASCII, but also, for example, in Cyrillic.

Nokia of the mentioned series (6230 and 6230i) have USB interface, connect and perfectly, reliably work with your computer.
From the OS point of view, the phone looks like a modem connected to a virtual com port.
It would seem that everything is fine, but these Nokia do not charge batteries. When connected to USB port the phone reacts to the connection, but says “not charging” on the screen. When the battery is discharged, the phone turns off despite the presence of power from the computer.

I researched the issue and found a solution how to make Nokia 6230, for example, connect to a USB port, work as a communication device and charge the battery.

The study of materials on the network on the device of the battery charging mechanism at Nokia gave the following. The phone itself has only a part of the charging mechanism. The telephone circuit contains a key that controls the supply of charging current to the battery, a mechanism for measuring the charging current, charging voltage and battery voltage. Nokia has two charging modes - in the documentation they are called "current" and "special".

Nokia nominal charging is a charging current generator. The words "current generator" mean precisely that the charger is a device with a high output impedance and tries to provide a stable current in the load.
The combination of the phone's charging subsystem and external charging provides full charging.
In the documentation, we managed to find the parameters of both charging modes.
The current mode is characterized by a relatively high open-circuit voltage (9.3 volts) and a high charging current (300 - 950 mA). The phone turns on charging (more precisely, does not turn off the battery) if the charging current is at least 300 mA at a voltage of at least 5.54 volts. When any parameter goes beyond the specified limits, the charging key will be closed and the display will show “not charging”.

The special mode turns on if the input voltage is in the range of 4.65 - 5.2 volts. If the input voltage is below 4.65 volts or in the range of 5.2 - 5.54 volts, the phone will consider the situation unacceptable and will not turn on charging.
For special mode, the charging current must be at least 90mA.

Nokia's documentation on charging modes mentions that a special mode is intended for charging from solar panels and other sources with a small and unstable current output.

Thus, to turn on the battery charge in Nokia, it is necessary to provide a voltage in the range of 4.65-5.2 volts and a current of at least 90 ma after charging is turned on in a special mode, or a voltage of more than 5.2 volts and a current of about 300 ma in current mode.

An experiment with Nokia 6230i and a laboratory power supply showed that charging does not turn on if the voltage is less than 5.3 volts. It was not possible to drive the phone into the special charging mode.

Standard USB port has a voltage below the required 5.3 volts and therefore the phone does not turn on the charging mode.

To increase the voltage, I decided to use a ready-made Step-up converter board. Searching for dilextremes gave me an LM2577 Adjustable Step-up Power Converter Module DC-DC board, which is a step-up converter. The board can operate with an input voltage from 3 to 30 volts and give an output voltage from 4 to 35 volts at a maximum current of up to 3 A. With a converted power of more than 15 watts, a radiator is needed. I bought such a board for 71 rubles with delivery (end of 2013). Surprisingly, the board arrived pretty quickly and turned out to be completely serviceable. There she is:

I put up output voltage boards for 5.4 volts. The experiment showed that the phone turns on charging from time to time in this mode. The battery is fully charged all the time, more precisely, the indicator on the screen shows a full charge. After a couple of months of work in this mode, I let the phone discharge before turning it off - 2 days. For a battery about 9 years old - an excellent result :)

In theory, charging should also start when voltage is applied and a little over 5 volts, but my phone wrote "does not charge" at voltages up to 5.3 - 5.4 volts. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the documentation I had for more new phone... I could not find docks with a description of the charging conditions for Nokia 6230i.

When I was dealing with the issue of connecting a phone, I did not have a specific Nokia connector. I considered it unreasonable to buy a cable for 800-900 rubles and soldered the wires directly to the connector and protected the soldering site with hot melt glue:

As usual, literally a week later in one of the Moscow Auchan, I accidentally stumbled upon the right cable for an insignificant 50 rubles. I bought this cable and probably use it for the next craft with Nokia, since I have a few more of them.

POP port pinout in the figure below:

The connector pins are counted from left to right if the phone is positioned with the screen up and with the connector facing you:

The first and second pins are located to the left and right of the circular charging connector and supply the charging current.
Pins 5-8 connect to the USB plug, (+5 V, D +, D-, GND) respectively.
Contacts 3 and 4 can be closed with each other, so the phone determines the connection of the accessory, which is what it writes on the screen. You can do nothing with these contacts, this does not affect the operation of the phone as a modem and charging.
USB power (usually the red wire) is also supplied to the input of the converter. The increased voltage from the converter is applied to the first pin of the POP connector.

But I wanted to expand it a bit.

Anyone who has a Nokia 5800 Express Music smartphone or similar models (Nokia 5230) knows that it is impossible to charge a phone via a Data cable. Therefore, either you have to constantly carry a charger with you, or buy an additional external battery, or risk being left without communication at the most inopportune moment for this.

My wife has a Nokia 5800 smartphone, so the power supply of the smartphone fell on my shoulders :).
Of course, an external battery is good, only in a small purse of my wife this gadget takes up quite a lot of space and adds unnecessary weight to it. And, as a result, she carries it around infrequently, only when there is a chance to stay with an empty battery away from home (where there are no outlets).
While walking through a Chinese website looking for a film for a smartphone, I stumbled upon a cable that has a USB connector on one side and a standard Nokia power connector on the other. Looking at the charger for Nokia specifications, I saw an output voltage of 5V (just the same voltage is in the USB port). Since the price seemed low, it was decided to buy this cable.
Dealextreme, as always, broke the package, so this cable came completely alone in its personal package. The cable was packed in cellophane:

Here is a closer photo of him:

Here is a photo along with the original charger:

It immediately struck me that the connector for Nokia is slightly larger in the purchased device. Here's a photo for comparison:

Tests:
First, insert the standard charger. Almost all of the connector fits into a smartphone:

Now we connect the purchased cable. We immediately notice that he could not fit into the smartphone entirely, a couple of millimeters does not fit.

We connect the cable to the USB port of the computer and ... lo and behold, the smartphone takes charge!

Pros: what are the advantages of a simple cable ... it just copes with its task. And I forgot - a very small price.

Minuses: long connector for a smartphone.

Conclusions: definitely take !!!

I plan to buy +6 Add to favorites I liked the review +5 +12

In this article, we will analyze the main reasons that the phone does not charge via a charger, USB or computer, and also provide instructions on how to fix it.

There are several reasons:

  1. Glitch in the phone operating system.
  2. Charger defective.
  3. Battery control circuit malfunction.
  4. Physical damage to the charging socket.

Now let's analyze the algorithms of actions for each of them.

Who has failed to discharge the battery and charge the smartphone at the airport, cafe or public transport? The problem is bigger than usual, but is this the most appropriate solution? Some experts say the dangers are many and therefore it is best to take precautions.

According to computer security data from Kaspersky Lab, cell phones leave a huge amount of data exposed when they are connected to computers during a process known as a handshake. In this data exchange, the phone transmits information through the computer through the computer. And he "tells" the machine what it is called, what is its manufacturer and its serial number what is it operating system and down to her list of files.

Glitch in the smartphone operating system

This is the easiest problem to fix. In fact, in this case, the battery is being charged, the system simply does not see it, that is, the percentages of the charge are not added on the screen. This can be caused either by turning off the battery indicator in the settings, or by a glitch in the system. In the case of a glitch, it is enough to restart your smartphone on Android or iOS.

Juicer: Stealing Files

This is the so-called "load vulnerability" and professional hackers can hide. Some of these viruses are disguised from official pages by overlaying windows to obtain personal and banking information from fraudulent emails. And this is just an example of "juicing".

Research journalist Brian Krebs, who specializes in cybercrime and digital security, explains on his blog that there are the same risks at free restocking points for public kiosks. “Some people can handle almost any risk in order to recharge their cell phone battery,” says Krebs.

Sometimes the problem may be that the charging indicator is displayed incorrectly and the phone turns off, although it shows that the battery is 100% charged, or is not fully charged. This is solved with the help, or, if the calibration did not help right away, then by flashing and then calibrating the battery.

Phone won't charge from charging or USB

This problem will require more time from you to diagnose and money to solve, but it shouldn't cause any special problems. In this case, the malfunction may consist either in a breakdown of the charging power supply itself, or in a cable break. You can check the performance of the charger by taking a voltmeter and measuring the voltage at the output connector. If there is no voltage, then the charging will have to be changed, although in the case of a USB adapter, you can try to change only the cable first. It is best to buy branded chargers, but if for some reason this is impossible, then you should carefully compare the performance characteristics new charge with the old performance characteristics and check its performance immediately upon purchase.

Use the encryption and authentication features of your mobile phone to protect your data and files. You will find them among the security settings. Do not charge your mobile phone with computers and charging points that you do not trust. If you run the risk of uploading it to a less reliable site, do not unlock it while charging.

Modern mobile phones or smartphones with an Internet connection, despite the presence of fairly efficient lithium batteries, are excellent energy consumers. When using them with their default configuration, we will check that the battery is being consumed quickly, sometimes it can only last for a few hours.

Malfunction of the battery control circuit

Modern batteries have their own control and protection circuit and sometimes the problem may lie in it. Usually, problems in it are accompanied by sudden shutdown device without the subsequent ability to turn it on. In this case, all that remains is to replace the battery.

Physical damage to the charging socket

You cannot fix this problem on your own, it requires contacting the service center, so we will not consider it in detail.

Afterword

And so we see that in most cases this kind of problem can be solved on our own and without much expense, except in cases of physical damage to the charging socket or when the battery is non-removable. In these cases, the problem can be solved only by contacting the service center.

If your device works well in safe mode, the problem may be caused. The worst part is what happened to us when we needed it the most, like waiting for an important call, message or email, etc. No, it can actually be dangerous.

Before addressing the hacker problem, it's important to note that not all power sources are necessarily good for your phone. There are many complaints on the internet, mostly from users trying to download their latest phone by plugging them into adapters or used chargers. In some cases, phones have become unusable. In some even stranger cases, people picking up their phones while on duty have been seriously injured or even killed.

Why the phone won't charge: what to do By DimkaVarlamov average rating 3.5 / 5 - 2 user ratings

Actually, this problem is very rare. As soon as you connect your smartphone / phone to the USB port of a computer or laptop, it immediately starts charging automatically. This is, so to speak, the norm. Even if you connect the device to the USB port of the TV, the smartphone will start charging in the same way. Yes, not as fast as from the mains, but it will charge. And yet, some users complain that when the device is connected, it does not even start charging. What's the matter?

Unfortunately, these are more than just accidents. We doubt you want to test the longevity of your phone this way. On average, the phone's file and folder host system requires over one hundred kilobytes of data. To give you an idea, this is the size of a copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland eBook.

Locking your phone would save you that risk, but honestly, would you like to do without your phone while it answers? The size of this data depends on mobile platform and the host operating system. But in any case, it is more than just a "charge". As we have found out, this data includes the name of the mobile phone, the name of the supplier and the serial number.

If we were talking about tablets, it would be much easier to answer the question posed: this is due to the fact that some tablet models do not initially imply USB charging. The reason is simple: they use more power than they get from the USB port of a computer or laptop. This applies to large tablets, with much smaller smartphones there are no such restrictions, and therefore it is necessary to look for the reason.

You should probably think that you don't see where the problem is, there is only one, since we found that we were looking for information available to the public that a particular provider allows much more than what is indicated in the system. The latter were developed several decades ago to provide communication between modems and computers.

These commands allow you to call any number at your own expense, of course. And if you are roaming, such unexpected calls can quickly make a bill. Depending on the provider, roaming mode can make it easier for a hacker to install any type of application, including malware.

Reboot the device

This is the first thing you should do with this kind of problem. If there is a failure in the software of the smartphone, it is the reboot that allows you to cope with it in most cases.

Reboot the gadget, reconnect it to the USB port and see if charging has started.

Everything you just mentioned is possible even if your smartphone is locked! It is a system that collects data from devices to which it is connected for any reason. It's a wobbly power source like a powerful capacitor or a computer that installs a backdoor on your device. One thing you ignore until you turn it on.

Using the fast charge function

Note. This type of charger is easily identified by the presence of this reference on the charger itself. You can use the accessories that best suit your needs!

Connect your mobile device to Adaptive Quick Charge or Quick Charge 0 compatible.

Cable inspection

It would seem, what could happen to the USB cable? It looks like new ... Yes, most of the time the USB cable really looks like new or, at least, is in excellent condition, but this does not mean that it functions normally. It is enough just to squeeze it once, for example, with a chair leg, so that it stops working.

Increase your download speed

If you try to recharge the battery using a standard charger, you will not be able to use the fast charge function. The battery is charging, but the battery charging time will be normal. Turn off your device's display to increase charging speed. You can check the remaining time by looking at the smartphone screen. Battery charging time may vary based on your own charging conditions.

If your phone overheats while charging, or if the temperature in the room it is in increases significantly, the charging speed will decrease. These are normal working conditions to prevent damage to the battery and your smartphone.

By the way, it is easy to check this. Connect the USB cable with your phone to network charging and see if the device is charging. If so, it's definitely not the cable.

By the way, even if the cable is working, but you have another one, try using it.

Is my smartphone charging overnight bad for the battery?

If it is not, it will negatively affect the charging speed of the battery and significantly increase the charging time. Function fast charging sensitive to the equipment used: a partially damaged cable is sufficient to prevent the fast charging function from working. This security system is designed to protect your device, but also from yourself. Let your device charge for about 10 minutes and the fast charge function should activate itself.

Cleaning the microUSB connector pins

Pay attention to the microUSB port on the smartphone itself. Perhaps dust has accumulated in it and the contacts need to be cleaned - the problem is in them.

In an amicable way, it is better to clean the contacts with an eraser, but they simply cannot crawl into such a small hole, so you can use a ratchet or a match with a cotton swab. And be extremely careful - one awkward movement and the microUSB port will be disabled. In this case, the phone will not charge at all.

Sometimes restarting your device can speed up the process. The fast charge function is so sensitive that it is susceptible to faulty electrical installation... It is possible that the current socket is working, but a small connection issue can cause the socket to fail 100% and prevent the fast charge function from working. Your device will charge at a slow rate and you will increase battery wear! Unfortunately, the fight against counterfeiting comes down to the fight against hydra: when we close an online store, the seller opens a new one under a new name within one hour!

Using other USB ports

Be sure to use a different USB port if present. It is possible that the current USB port is not supplied with energy, or there is not enough current, or it is completely out of order.

Lack of charging current

If there is not enough current, the smartphone will not charge from the USB port. However, like other devices.

How is cable so dangerous?

A real cable chaos because it is difficult for the consumer to know what he is buying and often, especially with this type of cable, tends to save a few euros. The creation of power delivery profiles has become necessary for simultaneous use with the same chargers old devices and new devices with different needs.

To work in last mode considering the risk of "frying" the device, the cable must be active and with two processors swapping the charging modes accepted by both, deciding that it is best to reboot the device quickly.

Because a reversible cable is used by two.

Choice That Benefits: The device therefore assumes that it is connected to a charger that can deliver 3 amps and requires the amount of power to be very fast.

Why is there a lack of current? The reasons may be different: lack of power in the USB port located on the front panel is a common problem, you must use the port located on the rear wall of the system unit; low-power circuits motherboard; component settings, etc.

Installing an application on a computer

The power indicator turns red while charging and turns off when the camera is fully charged. Download the application appropriate for your computer. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the instructions on the screen to install it. When such a screen is shown below, the installation is complete.

Checking and Editing Camera Settings

Start the application installed on the smartphone. It's not a cheap name for horror, and the fact that you need a better cable to carry more electricity, and cheap wires are often not good. The charging cables also cannot be too long, because the longer the cable, the greater its resistance, the more difficult it is to provide the correct current and keep the voltage drop.

microUSB port does not work

V in this case we are talking about the microUSB port of the smartphone. If it fails, then the device does not charge at all and there is only one way out - to change the part.

What if all else fails?

First, try connecting your smartphone with another computer or laptop to the USB port. If it still does not charge in this case, the matter is probably in the device itself, but only a specialist can find out the true reason.

Sometimes there is a need to charge phones or Nokia smartphones that are equipped with USB connectors from a computer. If you are the owner of such a phone, it is no longer a problem to charge it, tk. it can even be powered by a portable device.

You will need

  • - smartphone or Nokia phone with usb connector;
  • - PC or laptop;
  • - connection cable.

Instructions

  • If we talk in general about charging a phone from a computer, it is worth noting that this way is most likely rarely used. It is much more convenient to use all the usual chargers (power consumption will be less). But in case of emergency, when there is no way to charge the phone in a standard way, such an alternative will come in handy.
  • But Nokia devices have some nuances. For example, USB charging does not work on some models. It turns out that the whole problem lies in correct connection phone and select the appropriate mode. In a hurry, when connecting the device to a computer, you can reset the selection of modes, which leads to a rejection of the battery charge. Therefore, do not ignore the Select Action menu.
  • Connect 2 devices to each other using a USB cable. There will be a standard USB connector on one side of the wire, and a mini-usb connector on the other. Turn on your computer, it may be Personal Computer, and a laptop, and even a netbook.
  • A menu will appear on the screen of the telephone set, which consists of several items of the telephone startup modes. When choosing any mode, charging battery the phone will start automatically. Often times, users click on "Reset" and charging does not start.
  • It is recommended to select either "Mass Storage" or PC Suite. When choosing the first mode, you can copy all required files to a computer or vice versa, upload it to your phone's memory card. When choosing the second mode, it is possible to make backup data and store it on the hard disk of your computer device.
  • When the phone battery is charged, the power flow will stop - the charge status indicator will stop at its maximum value.
  • Did you know that Nokia designed the Nokia 5230 under austerity? Not? Does it seem to you that the price of the device has nothing to do with the savings in production? So marketers know their stuff!

    So what do we have. On our table lies a Nokia 5230 with the 848 series firmware. The firmware is buggy. For service centers(official, authorized) instructions have been issued, according to which, before trying to fix anything (even if the buttons are sticking), you need to update the firmware.

    • assign a drive name to the memory card from the phone (for example, "drive Z" in Windows Explorer);

    • work with an address book, synchronize it with Outlook, TheBat! and even GMail and Yandex.Mail;

    • set up the Internet in the phone, simply by choosing the name of the operator, the program already knows all the parameters;

    • hand out Mobile Internet to a computer via USB;

    • copy, move and delete files on the phone;

    • install applications;

    • setting up and working with the call log (you can configure it so that calls to some numbers will never be saved in the log);

    • you can unlock the device;

    • you can reflash the device;

    • much more ...

    As you can see, the list of program features is enormous.
